
ALLOWABLE ANNUAL CUT
The Haida Gwaii Management Council is responsible for determining a new Annual Allowable
Cut (AAC) for Haida Gwaii. The AAC is the total amount of timber that can be harvested
per year from the timberlands (excluding fee simple lands) on Haida Gwaii. The new AAC determination will be the first Timber Supply Review has been undertaken for the whole
of Haida Gwaii into one determination. This new determination must be consistent and
account for the new legal objectives order (EBM).
This new AAC will also account for all recently protected and formerly conservancies,
ecological reserves, parks and ecological areas.
This will be the first time that any decision body has been given the authorization by
the CHN (Haida Gwaii Stewardship Act and by BC (the Reconciliation Act) to undertake
a decision that was made solely by the Chief Forester of B.C.
The HGMC have authorized a joint technical team to examine relevant forest management
data and undertake analysis requested. The HGMC will:
Following the HGMS AAC determination, BC’s Chief Forester will be responsible for allocating
to the existing forest tenures ( two Tree Farm licensees, one Timber Supply Area) the
portions of the timber volume that may be harvested from each of these areas, not
exceeding the new AAC determination.
